Sand to be extracted from the sea for roadbuilding

The sand mining off the coast of the southern province of Soc Trang for highway construction is expected to begin soon.

The sand mining off the coast of the southern province of Soc Trang for highway construction is expected to begin soon.

According to Tran Van Lau, the provincial People's Committee chairman, a My Thuan Project Management Board contractor will be selected to begin sea sand extraction.

The province is now awaiting the approval of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment for sand extraction offshore. The locality has set up inspection teams to monitor sea sand mining activities.

At a recent meeting with Soc Trang authorities, the My Thuan Project Management Board noted that the current weather conditions favour sea sand mining. However, the weather between October and November, with strong winds, would cause difficulties. Meanwhile, the long-delayed sand mining would significantly impact expressway projects.

According to a survey from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, an area of 32 square metres has approximately 145 million cubic metres of sand suitable for use as a filling material.

Earlier, Soc Trang Province invited 29 provinces, cities, and investors to register their demand for sand for highway projects.
