Although local farmers have complained about a poor crop this year, many gardens have received lots of traders willing to pay high prices for the fruit.
A farmer, Giap Van Giao in Truong Giang Commune shared that their trees had produced fewer fruits this year due to unfavourable weather. "The cold weather together with rain last winter badly affected the lychee flowers for this crop," Truong explained.
Director of Giang Giang Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Nguyen Van Thi, said that this year's lychee output was nearly 100,000 tonnes, half of last year's figure.
Farmer Dinh Thi Huong said that they were selling the fruit easier at higher prices due to the poor crop.
"Previously we had to take out fruits to an area near the National Road 21 for traders to collect, but now they're coming to our gardens," she said. "We're selling the best fruits at approximately VND60,000 (USD2.36) per kilo, double last year's prices."
Lychee crops usually last from late May to late July. The farmers usually pick the fruits in the early morning for traders to collect at between 6-10 am.
The fresh fruits will be soaked in icy water and then kept in refrigerators. Most of the fruits will be sold to China
The Bac Giang Provincial Department of Industry and Trade said that the province has sold nearly 27,000 tonnes of lychee or 26.9 percent of total output as of June 3.
