Quach Thi Doanh, 59, hugged her grandson Ha Van Duy in her arms, trying to comfort him as the boy was crying in pain.
"I love you my dear," she said softly, with tears running from her eyes.
As the boy fell into a tiring sleep, Doanh shared that he is the son of her 29-year-old daughter Bui Thi Hien.
"Hien is slow and has brought Duy to live with me after divorcing her husband," she said. "Duy was only three months old at that time and had coronary artery disease. I had to constantly take him to hospital for treatment as Hien is illiterate."

As the boy grew up and was preparing to take primary school in 2020, the grandmother noticed abnormal signs and took him to hospital where doctors said that he had intellectual disability. But she still begged a local school to admit him. Duy has received love and support from teachers and friends over the past four years.
"But life has seemed too challenging to my little grandson," Doanh continued. "After seeing him having continuous high fever, I took him to a local hospital and was shocked when doctors said that he is in the final stage of blood cancer."

Doanh sold her last two cows and all the goats which were her biggest assets to have money to take her grandson to a higher-level hospital in Hanoi for treatment. But the money was only enough for three radiotherapy treatment courses while doctors said that the treatment would last long.
"He's now staying home waiting to take another radiotherapy course but I've run out of money," she said. "I'm very worried seeing him struggling with pains everyday but I'm just helpless."
The chairman of Phuong Nghi District People's Committee, Le Viet Huong, said that Doanh's family is really difficult, especially now as her grandson is facing serious health problems.
"We helped build a new house for them in 2021 as their old one was in a dilapidated condition," the official said. "Now we've also called for donations for Duy's treatment but we're a poor locality so the donations were limited. They need more support to save him."
