Nearly 1,000 houses in the two northern mountainous provinces of Cao Bang and Lao Cai had their roofs blown off in a whirlwind which ravaged the area on April 18.

According to reports from the two province's Steering Committees for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and Search and Rescue, more than 800 houses in Cao Bang and over 150 others in Lao Cai were badly affected by the whirlwind which lasted for several hours in the early Thursday morning.

The incident also damaged two schools in Cao Bang, some headquarters of local communal people's committees in Lao Cai, and some other public buildings in the two provinces.

The powerful rainstorm also destroyed hundreds of hectares of corn and production forest.

The two province's Steering Committees for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and Search and Rescue were dealing with the consequences of the whirlwind and helping local households repair their homes.
