Vietnam records lobster export growth

Vietnam earned nearly USD30 million from exporting lobsters in the first two months of this year, up 19-fold on-year.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers, green lobsters accounted for USD27.6 million, while the remainder were tropical rock lobsters.

China remained the largest importer of Vietnamese lobster during January and February, with a value of USD29 million, up 27-fold on-year.

In October last year, China suspended imports of Vietnam’s tropical rock lobsters due to its new Wildlife Protection Law. China requires clear proof of the farming processes for rock lobsters. It no longer accepts lobsters raised from post-larva naturally but F2 generation. Following the move, rock lobster exports slumped.

In January, Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development Deputy Minister Tran Quang Thanh led a delegation to China to work with the General Administration of Customs and Guangdong Province People's Government to co-operate on agricultural trade development.

At the meeting, the two sides agreed to address obstacles to the trade in rock lobsters through a special mechanism and would incorporate it into a protocol to be signed between the two countries.

Vietnam also exports lobsters to Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.
