A crew member is being taken care at a local healthcare centre.

According to the provincial border guard station, the ship Samadra Indah II was transporting 1,500 tonnes of rice from An Giang Province to Indonesia when it sank at 4.50 pm on January 29 some 20 nautical miles from Con Dao Island.

A Vietnamese fishing boat which was running nearby helped in rescue efforts and managed to save 12 crew members from the sinking ship. Three others remain missing.

The 12 crew members have been taken to the Ben Dam Port in Con Dao District for medical care. They are now in stable health.

Local rescue forces are still looking for the missing crew.
