Border gate officers from the southern province of Kien Giang announced on Tuesday that they had safely returned the girl, whose name was not disclosed, back to Vietnam from a casino in Cambodia.

Earlier, the officers were informed about the girl who was cheated by human smugglers and was sold to work for a casino in the neighbouring country. After co-operating with Cambodian authorities during their investigations, the Vietnamese officers found that the girl was working at a casino in Cambodia's Kampot Province some two kilometres from the Ha Tien International Border Gate.

With support from the officers at Cambodia's Prek-Chak Border Gate, Vietnamese officers came on January 29 to meet with the casino manager where the girl was working.

The casino manager said that they bought the girl from another casino and demanded a ransom of VND180 million. The Vietnamese officers managed to negotiate the ransom to VND30 million to rescue the girl and take her back home the same day.

The teenager remains in stable health but was frightened by her ordeal.

She said that she decided to leave home after having conflicts with her parents and was cheated after trying to find a job online.

Kon Tum Provincial Police Department recently received seven people who had been sold by a human trafficking ring to Myanmar.
