Tan Son Nhat Airport to install equipment to scare birds

Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City will install equipment to drive birds away.

Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City will install equipment to drive birds away.

The VND400 million (USD16,528) project will include eight sonic devices.

Similar equipment has been deployed at many airports nationwide. Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi has utilised sounds mimicking predatory birds emitted from pickup trucks, while Cat Bi Airport in Hai Phong uses fire trucks for bird deterrence.

Many aeroplanes at Tan Son Nhat International Airport have been hit by birds, including two Vietnam Airlines flights in January and March 2021.

The airport also recorded a case where the fuselage of an A350 aircraft from a Taiwanese airline was punctured with a 30cm hole following a bird strike.

The most dangerous situations often involve migratory birds flying at altitudes of 300 to 500 metres during flight take-offs and landings, making it difficult to prevent.
