A submerged object, suspected to be a ship, was found lying close to the coast near Cam An ward, Hoi An City in late December 2023.

The object was believed to be a long-lost vessel. The impact of tidal surges and ocean waves caused a portion of the ship to protrude above the water surface.

According to the Vice Chairman of the Hoi An City People’s Committee Nguyen Van Lanh, upon receiving reports of the discovery, specialist personnel from the city’s Cultural Heritage Conservation Centre were sent to the scene to conduct an initial check. Observations have indicated multiple dark brown wooden beams protruding between 10-30cm above the sea surface, resembling the shape of a vessel with a pointed prow. The boat’s width and length were estimated to be approximately 3m and 15m, respectively.

Quang Nam authorities are currently undertaking protective measures for the suspected shipwreck. They have cordoned off the area and safeguarded it around the clock to prevent unauthorised salvage operations.

At present, the area around the ship has faced bad weather over the past few days and the ship has been made invisible by high waves again.
