In 2007, Pham Thi Lien, 48, from Nghia Dan District’s Nghia Hong Commune married a man 10 years older than her. Three years later, she gave birth to Truong Van Dung.

The couple’s income mostly depended on farming work.
According to Lien, her husband suffered from wounds during the American War. One bullet fragment remained in his head, so it often caused him health problems. However, doctors said it could not be removed due to being embedded in a dangerous position.
In 2012, Lien’s husband had a traffic accident, leaving him hospitalised for months.
In 2019, she faced breathing difficulties and was diagnosed with heart problems. According to doctors, she needed surgery. So, she sold a plot of land to cover the costs of treatment. Just a short time later, Lien’s son, Truong Van Dung, had a traffic accident on the way to work, resulting in brain injuries. He was then taken to a hospital in Hanoi.
While Lien was taking her son to the hospital in 2020, her husband died.
Dung, 23, has had three operations. His condition has improved but he has struggled with mental problems, including violent incidents.
Locals have donated to help Lien, but her debt has risen to VND200 million (USD8,264).
