Smuggling between Vietnam and Cambodia becomes more common during the flood season every year, but border guards say that criminals have become more sophisticated.
Deputy head of the Phu Hoi Border Guard Station, Pham Van Phong said that they conduct patrols every day.

An officer at the station, Chau My, said that many smugglers travel at the same time as local fishermen.

"Many of them join the large numbers of fishing boats during the early morning hours to avoid being noticed," the officer said. "We have to be very attentive when patrolling at this time. It's also hard and dangerous to work during the storms and floods when more adventurous smugglers operate."

An Giang has a border of nearly 100 kilometres with Cambodia with two border gates of Vinh Xuong and Tinh Bien. Smuggling activities are rampant as criminals exploit the hundreds of paths, canals, and rivers between the two countries.
