Tran Thi Hong, 50, her sister, son, and daughter-in-law are all staying at the Nghe An Provincial General Hospital for treatment.
Hong is in the most serious conditions with her whole body being wrapped in bandages. Despite struggling with pain, she slowly turned her eyes to her sister, son, and daughter-in-law who are all staying in the same room.
According to Hong's daughter-in-law Nguyen Thi Ha, the horrible accident occurred at 10.45 am on September 17 when her husband Nguyen Dinh Manh was trying to install a new gas cylinder for their gas cooker to prepare lunch. The gas cylinder suddenly exploded, alighting five family members who were standing inside the room.
Hearing screams from the victims, neighbours rushed to take them to a nearby hospital.
Due to serious injuries, four of them had to be transferred to the Nghe An Provincial General Hospital for further treatment.
Hong's husband, Nguyen Dinh Hoa, has come to take care of the four at the hospital.
"I was extremely shocked when I arrived home that day and saw the scene," Hoa said. "I had to send Ha and Manh’s small children to a relative and come here to take care of them. I'm now worried about the large hospital fees for them."
Head of Village 3, Xuan Son Commune, Nguyen Sy Hung, said that Hoa's family were dependent on a modest income from farm work. Since the accident, they've faced financial difficulties due to the huge amount of hospital fees.
"The family have spent all their savings on treatment," the official said. "They've had to borrow over VND50 million while their treatment will last long and need more money. I hope that they will receive support to overcome this difficult time."
