Speaking at the meeting with the National Steering Committee on Natural Disaster Prevention and Control on Monday morning, Deputy Transport Minister Nguyen Xuan Sang said that they had asked some airports in the northern region to reschedule flights to avoid being affected by the storm.
Airports including Cat Bi in Haiphong City and Van Don in Quang Ninh Province are forecasted to be most affected by the storm while Tho Xuan in Thanh Hoa Province, Noi Bai in Hanoi, and Dien Bien may also be hit.
National flag carrier Vietnam Airlines has rescheduled some international flights which departed today, July 17, following forecasts about the storm.
Flights VN592 and VN593 between Hanoi and Hong Kong (China); and flights VN594 and VN595 between HCM City and Hong Kong have been delayed for seven hours.
Flight VN430 from the central city of Danang to Seoul, the Republic of Korea, will land at Incheon 45 minutes later than planned while the departure time from Danang remains unchanged.
Flight VN318 from Danang to Tokyo, Japan, will land at Narita Airport 25 minutes later than scheduled and the departure time from Danang remains unchanged. Some other flights may also be affected due to the changes in schedule.
The carrier said they would follow weather conditions and update on further flight schedule adjustments.
Typhoon Talim has formed from a tropical depression and has strengthened grades for the past 36 hours. It is now swirling across the northern part of the East Sea.
Talim with maximum sustained winds of up to 120kph is forecast to strike the northern coast of Quang Ninh and Haiphong at 4 pm on July 18.
Over the next 12 to 24 hours, Talim will move further inland, weaken into a tropical depression and dissipate over the northern mountainous region.
Northern localities are expected to endure a long spell of rain from July 17 to July 20, with widespread rainfall totalling 200mm to 400mm, or even 500mm in some parts.
