Many people have been hospitalised after being stung by jellyfish while swimming in the past month.

A seven-year-old girl suddenly fainted with her hands full of red jelly stings after swimming at a beach in Nha Trang City in the southern central province of Khanh Hoa. She was sent to Khanh Hoa General Hospital with a high fever.

Doctor Vu Thi Phuong Thao from the HCM City Hospital of Dermatology-Venereology said that the hospital had received 3-5 people with jellyfish stings over the past four weeks. The problem is regularly seen over the summer when people have more beach holidays.

She told about a recent case in which an eight-year-old girl suffered from a serious skin problem after returning from a holiday in Binh Thuan. She felt pain on her right arm and then experienced red patches and fluid-filled blisters later.

After a one-week intensive treatment at the hospital, she was allowed to return home.

According to Dr Thao, jellyfish stings if left untreated and not properly treated can spread quickly, leading to severe health implications.

People are advised to move away from the jellyfish-infested water and rinse their wounds with clean water and ensure they don’t expose their skin to infections. Allergy medications can be used to alleviate reactions. If the situation does not improve, people should get a medical check-up.

People should avoid using ice, hot water, or traditional remedies for the treatment as this may worsen the problem.
