Vo Thi Van, 67, in Bao An Tay Village in Dien Ban District is taking care of her husband Nguyen Van Phong, 69, who has struggled with liver cancer for a decade.

Van has sold all her household valuables to cover the treatment for her husband. However, Phong’s condition has recently worsened and Van could not afford the treatment.
Meanwhile, Van’s second son Nguyen Thanh Tam, 41, has been living with mental problems for five years.
Van has done different jobs to support the family. Now, they are living on modest social security payments in addition to a small income.
To compound matters, Van’s eight-year-old granddaughter Nguyen Thi Thanh Ngan had a traffic accident, causing a brain injury. According to doctors, the girl needs a surgery, but it is quite costly.

Tran Quang Khai, vice chairman of Dien Quang Commune, said that Van’s family is among the poorest households in the locality. Local authorities called on the local community to support them, but it proved modest.
