The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) have been fined VND270 million (USD11,489) for dust pollution affecting the neighbouring areas during the construction of Long Thanh International Airport.

According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, ACV did not arrange temporary reservoirs for holding rainwater and drainage canals. It also did not spray the construction site frequently to reduce dust.

The dust content at the construction site is between 5-10 folds higher than the permitted level, severely plaguing the neighbouring areas. Many houses in the Loc An-Binh Son resettlement area which is around two kilometres from the airport have been covered in dust.

The company has been requested to take drastic measures to deal with the pollution, including polymer and water spraying, particularly in dry and hot weather. ACV will reduce the construction intensity at 10-12 am and 1-4 pm which are the peak times for dry weather.

The firm has been urged to quickly build reservoirs for the water supply to dampen dust. ACV have to submit its dust mitigation plan to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the Dong Nai Department of Natural Resources and Environment before April 30. Every month, ACV have to report to the two agencies about the implementation.
