A representative from Dantri visited the family of Nguyen Dau The Bao, 15, in Quynh Lap Commune, Hoang Mai Town on April 21 to hand over VND 82,234,555 which readers sent to the newspaper's Charity Programme.
Receiving the money, Bao's grandmother, Tran Thi Phu, sent her sincere thanks to Dantri and the donors who supported her small grandchildren.
"Thanks to your valuable love and support, my children will have more motivation and opportunities to continue their life and studies," she said. "We'll put the money into a bank account for them."
Bao's uncle Dau Dinh Son said that he had also received VND106,068.445 sent to his bank account to support his four nephews.
"Thank you so much," he said. "We hope that the children will overcome this difficult time and have a good future.
Nguyen Dau The Bao is the eldest brother of three sisters aged 14, 12, and 10. Their father died eight years ago while fishing at sea. Earlier this year, their mother died in a traffic accident. The four children are now living with their 71-year-old grandmother who is poor.
According to chairman of the Women's Association of Quynh Lap Commune, Tran Thi Nhai, local authorities have also visited and provided some support to the children.
"Four families and organisations have committed to support the children until they reach 18," Nhai said. "We hope that they will soon overcome the difficulties and continue their life and studies."
