The Hanoi Department of Health announced on Monday that among the samples collected for a gene sequencing in Nam Tu Liem District, two came positive for the Omicron sub-variant XBB.1.9.1.


According to the department, sub-variant XBB.1.9.1 is now mainly circulating in the UK, Germany, the United States, France, Singapore, and the Philippines. It is rapidly transmissible with mild clinical course and
 is also classified by the World Health Organisation as a variant under monitoring.

Some days earlier, HCM City also found a patient infected with the new Covid-19 XBB.1.5 sub-variants through gene sequencing results.

According to the WHO, XBB.1.5 is currently the dominant variant globally which accounted for over 47 percent of cases found in March. XBB.1.5 has been detected in 94 countries.

Vietnam is witnessing a reoccurrence of Covid-19 cases and over the past week. The country confirmed an additional 1,031 new Covid-19 infections on April 17 which is an increase more than 300 cases compared to the previous day and the highest figure recorded in six months, according to the Ministry of Health.
