Chairman of Binh Dinh Provincial People's Committee, Pham Tuan Anh, speaks at the meeting
Speaking at a Thursday press conference, Anh said that he had heard the concerns of local people about potential environmental pollution that could be caused by the Long Son Iron and Steel Complex project which is planned to be built in Hoai Nhon Town. He stressed that local authorities supported the project but wouldn't sacrifice the environment for economic benefits.
According to the official, the VND 53 trillion Long Son Iron and Steel Complex was a major project. However, the province has just approved for the investor to proceed with a feasibility study and plan to be submitted to the government for approval.

"We’ll only accept a project that uses the latest technology and ensures Vietnam's environmental standards," he noted. "Some 560 households affected by the project need to be provided with a better life. Moreover, the project must not affect historical sites. If the project's investors meet these requirements, we’ll take their plan and send it to the government for approval."
The Binh Dinh leader also said that the province needs major projects like the Long Son Iron and Steel Complex to boost local economic development.
"We believe the project will be implemented soon," he said. "We'll work with the investor to ensure proper compensation for over 560 households affected by the project. We'll also arrange three resettlement areas where they can continue their farming and fishing jobs."
In 2022, the provincial people's committee approved in principle the Long Son Iron and Steel Complex and its specialised port invested by Long Son Phu My Steel JSC.
The VND53.5 trillion complex would span 468 hectares and consist of three investment phases, with a total capacity of 5.40 million tonnes per year. Once operational, it would produce high-quality, construction and rolled steel products.
