The mechanic where the explosion occurs on April 2.
Quynh Luu District People's Committee announced on Sunday evening that the accident occurred at 4 pm the same day at the shop of Le Tien Hien, 24.
"A scrap metal trader, Nguyen Duy Ky, 38, brought a metal object to the shop located on National Road 48E," the committee reported. "Hien, Ky, and a worker at the shop tried to cut the object and it suddenly exploded, killing Hien at the site and injuring Ky and four others including three children aged 8-14 who were playing nearby."
The injured victims were taken to a local hospital by some neighbours who heard the loud noise and screams and rushed to the site. However, the worker at Hien's shop, 30-year-old Nguyen Duy Nhat, also died shortly after of serious injuries. Ky suffered serious injuries to his legs and had to be transferred to a better hospital in Vinh City for treatment.
Much of the interior of the 200-metre shop was damaged in the explosion.
Chairman of Quynh Tan Commune People's Committee, Nguyen Thanh Tam, said that they have yet to define what the object was.
"Initial investigations by local military indicated that the object was not a bomb but probably a cylinder containing gas," he said. "Investigations are still underway."
