The mammals were detected on a beach in Cuong Gian Commune by local residents on March 26 and 28. One weighed 25 kilos and the other 50 kilos. Both of them were already decomposing.

Local authorities and people hold a burial ceremony for the whales in line with the locality’s customs.
Whale worshipping is common among Vietnamese fishermen who believe that whale spirits protect them at sea. The custom of conducting burial services for whales was established in the area hundreds of years ago.
The central province of Ha Tinh is home to a special cemetery which is the final resting place for more than 100 whales.
