The target was shared by the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development on February 22 when local firms sent eight containers of bananas to China.

Dong Nai is the country's biggest banana hub with 13,149 hectares. The province is producing an average of 450,000 tonnes of bananas a year with 80 percent for export.

The department said that China is currently the biggest importer of local bananas, followed by South Korea, Japan, and Malaysia.

"We're enjoying a good price of between VND12,000-14,000 per kilo of bananas now," the department said. "We've exported over 200,000 tonnes of the fruit in the first two months of this year, and our target for the whole year is 500,000 tonnes, compared to the 400,000 tonnes last year."

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Chinese General Administration of Customs signed a protocol for fresh bananas exported from Vietnam to China last November.

China’s re-opening in early January and its increasing import of fruits and vegetables from Vietnam; and the efforts of Vietnamese exporters to maintain orders with partners in the US, the European Union, and Japan, have helped local farmers.

The country is expected to achieve an export turnover of USD2 billion from exporting dragon fruit, bananas, and durian in 2023.
