Nguyen Thi Mai, 43, is living with her twin sons in a deteriorating house in Dong Hai District after her husband left them four years ago, just a month after she gave birth.
The poor woman struggled to earn a modest income to support her children by making cakes and growing vegetables to sell around her village. She has weak legs so faces difficulties moving, which has left her family very poor.
After her story was recently shared on Dantri/Dtinews, many readers have sent money to support her.
Representatives from Dantri/Dtinews and some local officials visited Mai on February 13 and transferred VND 227,650,491 which readers sent to the newspaper's charity fund to help her family.
Receiving the money, Mai sent her sincere thanks to kind donors for their valuable support.
"I've also received over VND10 million which donors sent to my bank account," she said. I'm very moved when receiving so much help from the public. Thank you so much."
Dong Hai District People's Committee Vice Chairwoman Nguyen Hong Cam during the visit also expressed her thanks to Dantri Newspaper and kind donors for helping Mai's family.
