Two four-year-old boys drown after falling into a Koi fish pond at their neighbour's house in the northern province of Quang Ninh on February 8.
Vice chairman of Ha Long City People's Committee, Nguyen Ngoc Son, told Dantri/Dtinews on Thursday morning that the incident occurred in Cao Xanh Ward late on Wednesday afternoon.
"According to the families, the two boys left their homes to visit a nearby neighbour at 5.30 pm," the official said. "The families came to look for them at 6.10 pm but failed to see them there. A neighbour, Cao Van Le, who lives about 20 metres away from the boys' house, then found the two boys in the Koi fish pond at his home. Le rushed the boys to a local hospital but they had died from drowning.
The fish pond was about 20 square metres wide and over a metre deep.
Earlier, a three-year-old boy also drowned after falling into a Koi fish pond at a cafe in the southern province of Binh Phuoc.
A 2020 report by the Department of Child Affairs said drowning is one of the major causes of death of children aged 12-15 in Vietnam. The country records 2,000 drowning deaths on average every year, the highest in Southeast Asia.
