A poor elderly man in the central province of Nghe An is in need of financial help to support his ill wife and two small grandsons whose father died.

Sitting in his small badly-deteriorated house, Pham Xuan Giao, 71, said that he was worried about the treatment fee for his wife.
"My wife has just undergone a seventh operation to treat cervical cancer and the doctor said that she needed radiation therapy now," he said with a sigh.
Lying in a bed nearby, his wife Thai Thi Cuc, 69, looked tired. She said that she has been struggling with cancer since 2015.
"My poor husband has borrowed lots of money to cover my treatment over the past eight years," she said. "His health is not good and sometimes he also needs to go to the doctor. But he's still trying to do some odd jobs to earn some money and support me and our two small grandsons."
The elderly couple shared that they have seven children together but they are all living far away and they don't have much money to help their parents.
"One of my daughters has sent her two sons to live with us after her husband died 12 years ago," Giao said. "She has gone to Haiphong City to seek a better job to raise her sons but her job is still difficult. We have to support our grandsons."

Cuc said that sometimes she just wanted to die to ease the burden on her husband but he always tried to encourage her.
"He has had to sell all our belongings to cover my treatment fees which have reached over VND 100 million," the wife said. "Now we have only this deteriorating house left.
Giao said that he was willing to sell the house to save his wife if needed.
Talking about Giao's family, the chairman of Khanh Thanh Commune People's Committee, Nguyen Dao Quy, said that local authorities have also tried to provide some financial support to this case but they need more help from the community as the wife's treatment would last long and costly.
