Nguyen Thi Em, 81, is living with her two daughters Thai Thi Nuong, 42, and Thai Thi Phuong, 40, in Phuoc Ngai Commune, Ba Tri District.
Em used to work as a farmer and earned a modest income to support the two mentally-ill daughters but now she's too weak to work and the family are living on donations and allowances from the government.
Sitting in an old house that has badly deteriorated, the elderly woman said that her eldest daughter Nuong was healthy until she turned 17. Her problems are worsening and she keeps wandering in the garden all day.
Nuong develops mental problems when she turned 17.
"And my second daughter Phuong also developed the same problems after falling ill several years ago," the poor mother said. "She used to be a smart woman and had a good job after graduating from university. But now Phuong only wants to stay home and keeps herself inside a dark room."
Em said that her husband died five years ago, she now takes care of the two daughters on her own without any income.
"Although my husband was poor, he helped a lot in taking care of them," she recalled. "His modest income was also enough to buy some medicine for them. But now I don't have any money to cover their treatment. And I'm worried for their future when I die."
Chairman of Phuoc Ngai Commune People's Committee, Vo Minh Cong said that Em's family used to be a happy home with two healthy and smart daughters until they fell ill.
"Now they're the most difficult case in our commune," he said. "Local authorities and some donors have provided financial help so that they can buy food and some medicine. But they need more support to continue the treatment for the two daughters and build a new house as their house is collapsing.
