Hoi An Japanese Covered Bridge restoration project starts

The authorities of the central province of Quang Nam’s Hoi An City have kicked off a project to restore Chua Cau or the Japanese Covered Bridge.

The authorities of the central province of Quang Nam’s Hoi An City kicked off a project to restore Chua Cau or the Japanese Covered Bridge on December 28.

The VND20.2 billion (USD93,220) project will be carried out for a year with the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

The work will focus on reinforcing the foundations and floor, abutments, wooden frame and roof along with updating the electrical and security camera system.

Nguyen Van Son, chairman of the Hoi An City People’s Committee, said that the bridge is an iconic Hoi An site. Being built around 400 years ago, it has seriously deteriorated.

The bridge was recognised as a national cultural and historical relic site in 1990 and a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. It is also a symbol of the cultural exchange between Vietnam and Japan.
