The Ministry of Transport on Tuesday morning kicked off construction of the National Highway 50 expansion project that connects Ho Chi Minh City and Long An and some other provinces in the Mekong Delta region.

The expanded section of the highway will have six lanes
The VND 1.5 trillion (USD 62.50 million) project will be implemented on a 6.92-km section in Binh Chanh District.
The highway will be widened from two to six lanes.
Speaking at the project's groundbreaking ceremony on December 27, Director of the Transportation Board Luong Minh Phuc said that the project was expected to be completed by December 2024.
"National Highway 50 is a key road linking HCM City and the two Mekong Delta provinces of Long An and Tien Giang," he said. "The highway has become overloaded with an increasing number of vehicles, posing threats of accidents. The project is expected to resolve traffic congestion as well as facilitate transportation between HCM City and the Mekong Delta region, and some other roads including the Ben Luc-Long Thanh Highway and the Ring Road 3."
