Japan’s Shinnyo-en Foundation awards 57 scholarships to disadvantaged students in the northern province of Nam Dinh.

The Japanese organisation has co-operated with the Vietnam Fund for Learning Promotion for 14 years to provide scholarships to disadvantaged students, as well as build bridges and schools in many areas in Vietnam.

After three years sending their support online due to the Covid-19 pandemic, representatives from Shinnyo-en Foundation arrived in Vietnam to present the scholarships to students in some localities.

Speaking at the meeting with students and education officials in Nam Dinh Province, Shinnyo-en representative Shoji Harashima said that he was very happy to hear that local students have maintained the country's first ranking in graduation and university-entrance exams' results over the past six years.

"I believe that the students who have overcome difficulties to achieve good study results will even study better after receiving the scholarships," he said.

Vice chairman of Nam Dinh Provincial Association for Study Promotion, Nguyen Thi Theu, said that she was very moved when seeing local disadvantaged students being supported with the scholarships.

"Among the 57 students, 21 are orphans, three others are disabled while others are from very poor families," Theu said. "However, they have overcome their difficult conditions to study well. The scholarships are big presents for them."

Mai Thanh Tung was among 57 students who received the scholarship of VND1.09 million from Shinnyo-en Foundation this year. He said that he would use the scholarship to pay for an English course.

"This is a very meaningful help to us, thank you so much for your support," Tung said.
