Flights between Vietnam and China resume after nearly 3 years

A flight from Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam to China's Guangzhou took off on Friday morning, marking the first commercial flight between the two countries after a three-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

A flight from Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam to China's Guangzhou took off on Friday morning, marking the first commercial flight between the two countries after a three-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The flight route, which is operated by the national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines, was resumed after China loosened its Covid-19 prevention policies and travel restrictions.

According to Vietnam Airlines, there will be three air routes resumed in the near future. The Ho Chi Minh City-Guangzhou route will be conducted every Friday starting from December 9; the Hanoi-Shanghai route every Monday and Friday from December 12; and the HCM City-Shanghai route every Wednesday from December 14.

Passengers are advised to obtain information from the Chinese Embassy on Covid-19 prevention regulations before taking the flights to the country.

With the resumption of services to China, Vietnam Airlines will be running more than 600 international flights per week, or 70 percent of the pre-pandemic figure.

China used to be Vietnam's biggest tourism market, with nearly 5.80 million Chinese visiting in 2019 before the Covid-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, some 36,000 Vietnamese people live in the neighbouring country.
