Sleepers buses with more than 30 seats will be banned from travelling into the centre of HCM City to ease traffic jams.

According to Phan Cong Bang, deputy director of the HCM City Department of Transport, in the first phase, the ban will be applied from December between 6 am and 10 pm every day. In the second phase scheduled to begin in 2025, HCM City would consider prohibiting sleeper buses with more than 16 seats.

Traffic jam in HCM City

Currently, many areas in HCM City, including those in District 1, Thu Duc City and Binh Thanh District commonly see unofficial bus pick-up points. Around 140 of 300 bus services pick up passengers at unlicensed spots instead of Mien Dong Station.

To improve the situation, local authorities will tighten control over roads that regularly face illegal pick-ups.

More cameras have been installed on Dien Bien Street to detect illegal stopping. Since September, 36 violations ended in fines, causing six people to have their driving licences confiscated. The figure for the whole city so far this year is 1,700 cases with total fines of VND2.5 billion.
