A poor woman in the central province of Quang Nam is calling for financial help to raise four children as her health has deteriorated and her husband died 10 years ago.

Phan Thi Hoa
Phan Thi Hoa, 42, and her four children live in an old house built on a hill in Tien Phuoc District. The skinny woman who looks much older than her age, tried to guide us through a muddy road to visit her house.
"I'm sorry we have only two plastic stools," she said while inviting us to sit down. "My income isn’t even enough to buy food and pay school fees for the children."
The woman said in tears that she grew up in a poor family where her father died when she was just 15. She dropped out of school and got married early to a man who also came from a poor family.
"We were poor but we were always happy with our four beautiful daughters," she recalled. "However, the happy days soon ended when my mother died in 2011, and then my husband died in a traffic accident in 2012 when our eldest child was 10 and the youngest three."
The woman said she used to think of committing suicide at that time but then the children gave her the strength to continue living.
"I've tried to take up all the work I can to earn money to raise the children," she said. "I mainly work as a porter and a farmer, and in my free time, I go to the forest to collect wood and exchange it for food. Luckily my children also work hard and do very well at school."
Thanks to support from local families, her children are given allowances, insurance, and benefit from reduced school fees. However, as they grow up and follow higher studies, the mother is facing more financial difficulties due to her weakened health.

"My eldest daughter is now a third-year student at Hue University, my second child is going to finish high school, the third has just finished secondary school and the fourth is in eighth grade," she said. "I now owe some VND170 million which I borrowed to cover the university costs for my eldest child. They study well and they want to pursue higher studies but I'm worried I can’t afford it."
Hoa has heart problems and her health has deteriorated due to overwork and poor nutrition. She said she really hoped that her children could have the chance to study and find better jobs and have a better life than hers.
Head of Village 3, Le Thi Nam said that she really hoped that kind donors can support Hoa to better raise her children so that they can have a better future.
