Chuong Thi Tuyet, 59, in Hoa Son Village, Ta Ca Commune said that was the most violent flash flood she'd ever seen.

"The flood swept away my house and all my belongings," she cried. "Many of my neighbours are in the same situation. We're now homeless."

Another resident, La Thi Van, 36, said that the flood suddenly hit her village at around 7 am on October 2.

"I was coming home from the market when the huge flow of water started to run through the village," Van remembered. "I just had enough time to hold my little daughter and ran up to a nearby mountain. And when we returned, our house had been washed away. The roads were covered by thick 1-3-metre layers of mud."

Speaking to Dantri/Dtinews, chairman of Ky Son District People's Committee, Nguyen Huu Minh, said that the flood caused over VND 100 billion in damage.

"The Muong Xen Town and Ta Ca Commune were hardest hit with many local houses and public works were badly damaged," he said. "We're now trying to clear the debris, rebuild the work, and resettle our lives."

The flash flood occurred following heavy rains which were triggered by Storm Noru. Seven people in the province died and close to 20,000 houses had been flooded.
