Doan Thi Dao, 64, from Dinh Hoa District’s Minh Tien Commune and her children live in a run-down 10-square-metre room. Their only valuables have been borrowed from a relative.

Despite one aged 38 and the other aged 35, both of Dao’s children behave just like three-year-old children because they are struggling with mental issues.
Meanwhile, Dao is also facing epilepsy, so she can’t take care of her children. Every day, their relatives and neighbours have to help.
In 2001, Dao’s husband, who also had mental issues, died of liver cancer. After her husband’s death, she tried to do different kinds of jobs to earn a living. But since facing epilepsy, she has only been able to do light work, particularly as her left hand has only two fingers.
She even attempted to take her children to a local stream to commit suicide, but was prevented by local residents. She was then diagnosed with depression.
After being treated at Thai Nguyen Psychiatric Hospital for one year, she saw little improvement and returned home to look after her children.
