Vietnam reported a sharp rise in pork exports in July with an increase of 343.70 percent in quantity and 104 percent in value compared to the same period last year.
Statistics from the General Department of Vietnam Customs showed that the country exported 1,050 tonnes of pork, earning USD 4.47 million in July this year. Prices of exported pork products fell by 54 percent against last July, at only USD4,235 per tonne. The country's leading markets included Hong Kong, Thailand, and Laos with Hong Kong buying 57.48 percent of the total amount of exported pork.
By the end of July, Vietnam had exported 10,490 tonnes of meat, valued at USD 41.85 million, which was a fall of 4.50 percent in quantity but an increase of 3.30 percent in value compared to the same period last year.
Meanwhile, the country imported 350,860 tonnes of meat and meat products valued at over USD789 million during the seven months, which was a fall of 21.10 percent in quantity and of 9.80 percent in value compared to the same period of 2021. The amount included 55,210 tonnes of pork valued at USD117.50 million, falling by 42.10 in quantity and 46.90 in value against last year's figures.
The fall in pork imports this year was due to improved pig productivity.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) Phung Duc Tien said that the Vietnam livestock industry had set a target of 51 million pigs to meet demand this year.
Tien said that MARD had arranged forces to border provinces to inspect pig smuggling to China. With tighter control, pig smuggling via border gates had been tackled. However, the illegal pork trade continued.
The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development said that Vietnam is currently one of the world’s leading pork consumers and is likely to rise to rank second in Asia this year.
