The increasing number of residents in Hoang Liet Ward in Hanoi's Hoang Mai District has led to many children being unable to attend local schools due to overcrowding.

On August 27, hundreds of parents drew straws to get a place for their children at the only public kindergarten in Hoang Liet Ward for the 2022-2023 school year. The lucky draw was held after the school received too many applications from local residents.

The school could only admit 400 more students in the 3-4 age group but received 713 applications. Meanwhile, the school said they would try to admit all 226 applicants for the age five group, which is 100 up from the previous academic year.

Explaining the situation, the Hoang Liet People's Committee said that many apartment buildings in the area have recently been put into operation, attracting many young couples with small children. This has put a burden on local schools.

There are 85 apartment buildings in the area including 12 blocks at the HH Linh Dam Complex.

Once all these 12 apartment buildings are filled, HH Linh Dam Complex will have some 40,000 residents.

To meet the rising demand, Hoang Mai District has invested in the second branch of Hoang Liet Kindergarten but it has also rapidly become overcrowded.

Statistics showed that there were 8,155 children of preschool age in the ward.

Deputy head of Hoang Mai District's Department of Education and Training, Truong Thu Ha said that they were seeking approval from local authorities to build two more kindergartens in Hoang Liet Ward.
