Up to 50 metres of the coast has been eroded in the northeast of the island, swallowing thousands of metres of agricultural land.

Dinh Thi Men from An Hai Village from Ly Son District said that Storm Molave and Vamco in 2020 caused the erosion and the problem has worsened due to flood tides and violent waves.

“A large area of onion and garlic has been ruined by the erosion, if the situation does not improve, more agricultural land will be affected,” Men worried.

The erosion has also threatened Cau Cave, one of the most famous tourist sites on Ly Son.

Local residents expect that authorities will take more drastic measures to deal with the problem, including the construction of a dyke.
The eroded areas were previously planned to be a dumping site.
Pham Thi Huong, chairwoman of Ly Son Island People’s Committee, admitted the more serious erosion in the locality.
“Following the district’s proposal on the dyke construction, provincial authorities conducted a survey on the erosion. However, due to the province’s limited budget, nothing has yet been done to date,” Huong revealed.
