The 51-km long expressway is an extension of the existing HCM City-Trung Luong Expressway. It will shorten travel between the localities to two hours from the current three to four hours.

Addressing the event, Deputy PM Le Van Thanh hailed efforts by leaders of Tien Giang and relevant agencies in overcoming difficulties, especially in relocating more than 3,200 households, to complete the project.

Deputy PM Le Van Thanh speaks at the event.

"With the Trung Luong-My Thuan expressway being put into operation today, the government has fulfilled our promise with over 20 million residents of the Mekong Delta region," the deputy PM said.

Deputy PM Thanh added that the government is trying to complete 3,000 kilometres of expressway by 2025 and 5,000 kilometres by 2030.

Started in 2009, construction of the Trung Luong-My Thuan Expressway was delayed for a decade with the project’s investor changed twice and the completion deadline put off four times.

After the Deo Ca Group was invited by investors to take charge of the project in March 2019, the work was again affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
