Vietnam is one of the most heavily bomb-and-mine-contaminated countries in the world.

Statistics from the National Steering Committee on Overcoming Post-War Unexploded Ordnance and Toxic Chemical Consequences showed that during the French and American wars between 1945 and 1975, more than 15 million tonnes of explosives were dropped on Vietnam, which was four times higher than the amount used in World War II.

At present, bombs and mines are still covering up to 6.1 million hectares or 18.7 percent of the country’s land area.
