Pham Thi Voi from Tien Lang District’s Tien Thang Commune lives alone in a house which often faces flooding during the heavy rain. The house has deteriorated so it could collapse at any time, particularly as it is near the sea.
Voi is in dire need of the community support
Voi lost one of her eyes 20 years ago due to Glaucoma, while the remaining eye has also become blurry.
Voi has to use all pots and basins in her house to contain water when it heavily rains. She sometimes stays overnight to bail out the rainwater. Sandbags have been used to consolidate the house against strong wind.
During strong storms, Voi had to escape to somewhere safer.
The most valuable asset in her house is the old television. Every month, she lives on a very modest subsidy for deprived people.
Relatives and neighbours often give her food.
Her biggest dream is to have enough money to repair her house.
Pham Thi Dan, chairman of Tien Thang Commune’s Fatherland Front, said the board wanted the local authorities to provide assistance to help build a new house for Voi.
However, the locality’s budget is very limited, so the largest amount they could provide is VND20 million (USD862). Dan called on donors to help provide more support.
