Hanoi Chairman Chu Ngoc Anh has asked authorities in Nam Tu Liem District to strictly punish the woman who caused a fire that left one person dead and five others injured in the area on Thursday evening.
Many motorbikes were burned in the fire
The fire occurred at 7.15 pm on March 31 at a house on Chau Van Liem Street, Phu Do District after Tran Thi Thanh Hai set fire to a motorbike in the parking area under a five-storey house. After she left, the fire quickly spread. Police were called and safely rescued seven people from the house. Five others including four children were injured and one woman died from suffocation. They were all tenants at the house.
Hai was arrested
Following images from the security camera at the house, police quickly arrested Hai. The 29-year-old woman said that she just wanted to destroy the motorbike of her boyfriend who was renting a room at the house.
"I've just informed him that I was pregnant but he still decided to leave me," the woman told the police. "So I just wanted revenge."
The woman's boyfriend, who was safely rescued from the fire, said that he and Hai have broken up recently.
"I couldn’t imagine she would do that," the 28-year-old man said. "She is hot-tempered and she recently burned my laptop. I wanted to end our relationship but she wanted to continue and she got angry."
The woman was given a health check-up which showed that she was not pregnant, and had no mental health problems.
Meanwhile, the 25-year-old woman who died in the fire was in two-month of pregnancy and was preparing to get married, police said.
