According to the Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Centre, both of the earthquakes happened in Dien Bien Dong District.

The first one measuring 4.5 on the Richter Scale occurred at around 9:22 am at a depth of 13.2 kilometres, while the other measuring 3.4 on the Richter Scale at around 11:52 am had a depth of 8.1 kilometres.

To date, no losses have been reported, but many local residents quite clearly felt the shakes for a few seconds.

Dr Nguyen Xuan Anh, Director of the Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Centre said that the northeastern region of Vietnam is home to some fault systems, including Dien Dien-Muong Lay and Song Ma-Tuan Giao-Lai Chau. Several strong earthquakes previously happened in the region, including a 6.7-Richter Scale earthquake in Son La in 1982 and another measuring 5.3 on the Richter Scale in Dien Bien Phu City in 2001.
