Police in HCM City have concluded that a male student who was recently found dead in Saigon River had committed suicide.

Nguyen Van Nghia's body was found floating in the Saigon River on February 15
The 19-year-old student didn't come into the university to enrol for the second semester as planned but instead went to rent a room at a hotel on Ung Van Khiem Street in Binh Thanh District. He left the hotel at 3.55 pm on February 13 and walked to a lane leading to the Saigon River.
Security cameras at nearby houses showed that he went to the river bank and jumped into the river at 4 pm on February 13.
Checking Nghia's suitcase which he carried on his back, police found a stone weighing 10 kilos, a mobile phone and some personal papers.
Earlier the man who was a first-year student at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology caught a passenger bus from his Binh Dinh hometown on the evening of February 11 to enrol at the university. The bus arrived at the Mien Dong Bus Station in HCM City at 5 am on February 12. His family couldn't contact him and informed the police.
Nghia's body was found floating in the Saigon River on February 15 and was taken to his hometown.
"I still can't believe it," Nghia's father Nguyen Cong Doan said in tears. "Nghia was a calm man and didn't behave in any abnormal way recently. "He was hard-working and was always an excellent student at school."
Nghia's father said that it was his son's first trip to HCM City but due to the family's financial difficulties, they could not go with him.
"We gave him just VND 2 million (USD 87) for the trip and he paid VND600,000 for the bus ticket," the father said. "We intended to send him the tuition fees in five days."
