An additional 16,135 Covid-19 infections were confirmed in Vietnam on Wednesday, raising the total number of patients in the country to over 1.95 million, the Ministry of Health has reported.
According to the ministry's report, 16,066 of the new patients are locally-transmitted cases confirmed in 60 out of 63 localities in the country with five localities seeing the highest numbers including Hanoi (2,948), Khanh Hoa (772), Binh Dinh (702), HCM City (696), and Binh Phuoc (641). There were 69 imported cases confirmed the same day.
The new infections showed an increase of 47 cases compared to yesterday's figure. There were 10,889 infections found in the community.
As of Wednesday evening, 1,952,594 infections had been reported since the new outbreak occurred in the country in late April. Some localities that have recorded the highest number of patients include HCM City (509,501), Binh Duong (291,560), Dong Nai (98,965), Tay Ninh (83,619), and Hanoi (76,438). Vietnam has so far confirmed 34 Omicron-infected cases.
With these new infection cases, the number of Covid-19 patients in Vietnam has increased to 1,958,719. The country now stands 28th among 224 countries and territories worldwide in the number of infections.
On January 12, an additional 38,943 more patients recovered from the disease, raising the number of recoveries in the country to 1,635,899.
On Wednesday evening, a further 177 deaths related to Covid-19 were announced, bringing the total number of fatalities in Vietnam to 34,964. The high fatalities were reported in some localities including HCM City (18), Hanoi (13), Binh Phuoc (13), Long An (13), Tien Giang (13), Ben Tre (11), and Kien Giang (11).
Vietnam on January 11 administered 1.12 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines. The country has so far conducted over 163.53 million Covid-19 vaccine shots, with over 71.51 million people having received two doses.
