According to the ministry's report, 16,997 of the new patients are locally-transmitted cases confirmed in all 63 localities in the country with five localities seeing the highest numbers including Hanoi (2,505), Tay Ninh (862), Hai Phong (792), Khanh Hoa (782), and Binh Dinh (735).
The new infections showed an increase of 2,168 cases compared to yesterday's figure. There were 12,229 infections found in the community.
As of Wednesday evening, 1,811,863 infections had been reported since the new outbreak occurred in the country in late April. Some localities that have recorded the highest number of patients include HCM City (505,971), Binh Duong (291,127), Dong Nai (98,286), Tay Ninh (79,699), and Hanoi (56,735). Vietnam has so far confirmed 25 Omicron-infected cases.
With these new infection cases, the number of Covid-19 patients in Vietnam has increased to 1,817,721. The country now stands 30th among 223 countries and territories worldwide in the number of infections.
On January 5, an additional 22,662 more patients recovered from the disease, raising the number of recoveries in the country to 1,436,046.
On Wednesday evening, a further 230 deaths related to Covid-19 were announced, bringing the total number of fatalities in Vietnam to 33,475. The high fatalities were reported in some localities including HCM City (25), Dong Nai (30), An Giang (17), Tay Ninh (17), Binh Duong (15), Vinh Long (14), and Hanoi (12).
