Nguyen The Tam from Sam Son City’s Quang Dai Commune is taking care of his seven-year-old daughter Nguyen Song Huyen at Thanh Hoa Paediatrics Hospital.
Tam said that Huyen faced a long fever and was hopsitalised two weeks after she entered Grade 1. She was then diagnosed with encephalitis. Since then, she has been bed-ridden and can’t speak and smile.

Tam has been seeking different treatment methods for his daughter but her condition has not improved. He has sold all valuable assets in his family to pay the treatment fees. To date, the treatment fees have reached VND300 million (USD13,043).
Meanwhile, Tam’s wife has been suffering depression since their daughter’s illness. She would sometimes walk for more than 10 kilometres from home to hospital to see her daughter. She blames herself for Song Huyen’s illness.
The mother even drank pesticides to try to kill herself; but she was saved.
According to Tam, it costs his family VND6-7 million per month to pay Song Huyen’s treatment. He also has two other children.
Huyen's treatment is quite costly
La Xuan Trong, doctor from Thanh Hoa Paediatrics Hospital said that Huyen has to use a ventilator due to respiratory problems resulting from encephalitis. The treatment fees for her are quite costly as some kinds of medicine are not in the list of health insurance.
Many local residents have supported the family. Trong hoped that donors can help them.
