The project is intended to upgrade the airport to a 4E rating to handle Airbus A320s or equivalent sized and advanced military aircraft.

The total investment for upgrading Phat Thiet Airport has been raised to VND3.8 trillion (USD165.21 million)
Binh Thuan Province has finished the site clearance of 545.56 hectares of land for the project. Once completed next year, the airport is expected to serve 6-8 million visitors per year. This will help to boost economic and tourism development in La Gi Town which is home to nice beaches.
It takes passengers just around two hours to fly to Phan Thiet Airport from some of Vietnam's northern airports including Noi Bai in Hanoi City, Cat Bi in Hai Phong City and Van Don in Quang Ninh Province and then one hour to reach La Gi by Dau Giay-Phan Thiet Highway.
Agencies under the Ministry of Defence are responsible for steering the Air Defence-Air Force in the implementation of the project.
