Giang A Denh, 17, and his 19-year-old wife Thao Thi Thoa left their hometown in the northern mountainous province of Son La to seek a better life in the southern province of Binh Duong right after their marriage early this year.

The young couple, who are from the Mong ethnic minority group, were happy to find jobs as workers in an industrial zone in their new place with a total monthly income of VND13 million (USD565) together. Although life was not easy, they felt happy, especially after the wife got pregnant.
But life has become hard after the Covid-19 pandemic hit Binh Duong and their companies closed. They've had to live on donations from local authorities
"As we didn't have much savings, we soon ran out of money and could not afford life in Binh Duong anymore," Denh said. We wanted to return to our hometown as at least we won't have to pay for rent at home."
The couple heard that a group of people in Binh Duong were preparing to travel home in Son La by motorbike in late October and they decided to join.
"We left Binh Duong on September 30 and arrived in Hanoi's Son Tay Town after five days," Denh remembered. "My wife was in the 33rd week of pregnancy and I tried to drive carefully. But we didn’t rest and eat properly during the journey. The labour pains came to her when we were driving past Son Tay and she was rushed to hospital by the police who were guiding us through the town. She then gave birth in the police car. The baby was born prematurely and had to be transferred to Saint Paul Hospital while the mother stayed in Son Tay General Hospital."

Doctor Thai Bang Giang at the Saint Paul Hospital said that they admitted a prematurely born baby boy weighing 1.9 kilos on October 6. He suffered from neonatal infections and respiratory failure.
"After several days of intensive care treatment, the baby's condition is improving," he said.
According to the doctor, the couple have financial difficulties and they have had to call for support from staff at the hospital who have sent over VND 5 million to help them cover hospital fees and milk for the baby.
