About 765 trees along the To Lich River in Hanoi are being relocated for Yen Xa Wastewater Drainage Project.

About 765 trees along the To Lich River in Hanoi are being relocated for Yen Xa Wastewater Drainage Project.

Lang Street along To Lich River has two rows of trees. Many of the trees have been planted along the river for over 20 years. The residents living along the river said they were surprised and a bit sad when the trees were relocated.

This is a part of the Yen Xa Wastewater Drainage Project.

Management Board of Water Supply, Drainage and Environmental Construction Projects in Hanoi said among 765 trees, only 590 are considered urban trees. Trees that give shade in urban areas like tropical almonds or giant crepe-myrtle will be replanted after the project is completed. Other trees that are not considered urban trees will be sold for timber and the money will go to the state budget.

A total of 763 old and new trees and 7,335 square metres of grass will be replanted.

Yen Xa Wastewater Drainage Project has an investment cost of VND16trn and is the biggest drainage project in Vietnam yet. It is hoped that the project will help revive severely polluted rivers in Hanoi including To Lich River.

The contractors will both dig and drill underground to build a 21.6km long sewer system. The construction along To Lich River will be carried out in 48 months until March 16, 2024.
