According to the ministry's report, 997 of the newly-confirmed patients are locally-transmitted cases most of whom were detected in quarantine sites or areas under lockdown in some localities including 766 in Ho Chi Minh City, 60 in Binh Duong, 41 in Khanh Hoa, 24 in Vinh Long, 19 in Long An, 18 in Tien Giang, 14 in Phu Yen, 13 in Quang Ngai, six in Bac Ninh, five in Bac Giang, five in Vinh Phuc, five in Hung Yen, five in Dong Thap, three in Tra Vinh, three in Hanoi, two in Dong Nai, two in Ba Ria-Vung Tau, two in Nghe An, and one each in Ha Tinh, Ca Mau, Dak Lak, and Thanh Hoa.
Ho Chi Minh City continued to report the highest number of new infections in the country. On Tuesday the city also recorded 710 new patients, the majority of which are individuals who came into contact with confirmed Covid-19 patients or who were detected in either isolation and locked down areas.
As of Wednesday evening, 19,610 locally-transmitted cases have been reported since the new outbreak occurred in the country on April 27, including 8,151 in the virus hotspot of Ho Chi Minh City. The outbreak has so far spread to 56 cities and provinces nationwide.
Nine imported patients are all Vietnamese people who recently returned from Cambodia. They were sent to quarantine areas in An Giang and Tay Ninh provinces upon arrival and are now being treated at local hospitals.
With these new infection cases, the number of Covid-19 patients in Vietnam has increased to 23,071 including 21,180 locally-transmitted cases.
As of 6 pm on July 7, a total of 8,557 Covid-19 patients had recovered and been discharged from hospital.
So far there have been 102 deaths, most of them being the elderly with serious underlying diseases.
At present, over 200,000 people who had close contact with Covid-19 patients or returned from virus-hit areas are being monitored at hospitals, quarantine facilities, and at home.
As of July 7, Vietnam has conducted nearly four million doses of Covid-19 vaccine. More than 235,000 people have received two doses of the vaccine.
